Dorothy Elizabeth Lucas Obituary (1921 - 2009)

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Lucas, 88, of Madisonville, KY passed away at 6:58 A.M., Sunday, November 29, 2009 at St. Marys Medical Center in Evansville, IN. \ She was born May 25, 1921 in Christian Co., KY to the late Asa Hester and Florence Shelby Coombs. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lucas in July of 1986, two brothers and two sisters. \ Mrs. Lucas graduated from Nazareth School of Nursing at St. Josephs Hospital in Lexington, KY. She served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She completed the course in basic training for the reserve Army Corp at Billings General Hospital, Fort Benjamin Harrison and also served at Normandy. She received the EAME Campaign Medal and over seas service bar. \ She was the Director of Nursing at Hopkins Co. Hospital in the 50s and Assistant Director of Nursing for the T.B. Hospital. She received recognition for 30 years of outstanding public Health Service and dedication to the people of Kentucky and from the Green River District Health Department in 1986, where she served as a field nurse for several health departments. \ She was a member of the Hanson United Methodist Church and loved being a member of Happy Hands Quilting Club. She was also a member of the Kentucky Retirees Association. \ She is survived by her son and daughter, Bill and Carolyn Lucas of Slaughters, KY; two granddaughters, Missy (Ben) Almon and Tamara Clayton and five great-grandchildren whom she adored, Lucas, Jessie and Sam Almon and Ben and Heidi Clayton. \ Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Milby officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Madisonville. \ Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday and after 10:00 A.M. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. \ Pallbearers will be Leonard Willis, Robert Willis, Steve Coombs, David Coombs, Jim Little and Todd Little. \ Memorial contributions may take the form of donation to the Mary Kendall Home for Children in care of The Hanson United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. \
