Mr. Shirley "Sleepy" Rice Obituary (1936 - 2016)

Shirley 'Sleepy' Lee Rice, 80, of Madisonville passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Redbank Colonial Terrace in Sebree, KY. Mr. Rice was born June 29, 1936 in Hopkins County, KY to the late Henry Rice and Edna Cartwright (Rice). He was also preceded in death by his wife, Judy Rice; one daughter, Tonya Plunkette; and three brothers, Glendal Rice, Claude Rice, and Dorman Ray. He worked as a coal miner. He was a member of the Madisonville Bass Club and loved to hunt, fish, and golf. He is survived by one daughter, Tammy (Sonny) Stewart of Madisonville; one son, Terry Rice of Madisonville; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren, and his caregiver, Dana Vaughn and family. Funeral services will be held at 12 P.M. Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Bishop Jesse Campbell, Brother Micah Kelly, and his son, Terry Rice, officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday and from 10:00 A.M. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Keith Curneal, Adam Clendening, David Messick, Chris Vinson, Dennis Vaughn, and Brian Wyatt. Memorial contributions may be made to Diamond Baptist Church. Envelopes will be made available at the funeral home.
