Jackie Martine Oates Obituary (1928 - 2007)

Mrs. Jackie Martine Oates, 78, of Madisonville, KY died at 3:38 A.M. Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at the Regional Medical Center Emergency Room. \ Born November 9, 1928 in Hopkins County, KY she was the daughter of the late Samuel Martin Cartwright and Jessie Howton Cartwright. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Cartwright and one great-granddaughter, Faith Harper Angel. \ She retired from the Hopkins County School System in 1988, after 40 years as a teacher and principal. She taught at Fiddlebow, White Plains, Mortons Gap, Seminary Street, Waddill Ave and Branch Street schools. She was the principal at Hall Street and then at West Broadway School from 1974 until 1988. She graduated from Western Kentucky University where she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. \ She was a lifelong member of Grapevine Baptist Church serving as Sunday School teacher, pianist and organist. \ She was a Woodmen of the World and in 1987 was named Lions Club Woman of the Year. \ She loved to read,to teach,to play with her dog, Ruffin,to crochet,to collect glass shoes, to play the organ and to play with her dog, Ruffin; however she loved being with her family the most. \ She is survived by her husband, Ralph Oates of Madisonville; one daughter, Susan Haywood Gooden of Mt. Vernon, IN; two grandchildren, Ginger Fuson Angel of Mt. Vernon, IN and Allen Martin Rutherford of DeKalb, IL; two great-grandchildren, Riley Angel and Colby Angel. \ Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Gifford officiating. Burial will follow in the Lafayette Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny Daves, James Acklin, Darrin Daves, Allen Bryant, John Knight, Harold Hibbs, Allen Buchanan and Dale Hawkins. \ Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Saturday and on Sunday after 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. \ Memorial gifts may take the form of donations to the Grapevine Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. \ \
